May Book Pick

About a week ago I put several choices up for voting as to what book the inaugural virtual book club would like to read. You can see the options here under May Book Club Choices. While you are there, April is National Poetry Month in the US and I have added a few of my favorites if you’d like to check them out.

The choices for May were:

  1. Mystery– The Mystery of Mrs. Christie by Marie Benedict
  2. Fantasy– Malice by Heather Walter
  3. Poetry– Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds
  4. Sci-Fi– Machinehood by S.B. Divya
  5. Self Help– Atomic Habits by James Clear
  6. Nonfiction– The Book of Eels by Patrik Svensson

The book that received the most votes by my yoga and book friends was The Mystery of Mrs. Christie!

Beach bag filled with books
I intended to start this on my vacation, but the beach was too distracting. 😍

So this part of the story is true- the famous author, Mrs. Agatha Christie, disappeared for 11 days in 1926. There was a large manhunt to try to find her, including dogs to track her scent. When she returned just as mysteriously as she left, she had no memory of what happened to her.

“Investigators find her empty car on the edge of a deep, gloomy pond, the only clues some tire tracks nearby and a fur coat left in the car–strange for a frigid night.”

-Marie Benedict (From the Jacket)

This novel is based on those events and has received great reviews for being well written. And the ending is supposed to be a very plausible explanation of what happened in the time that she went missing. Now, I have not yet read this. So I can’t vouch first-hand, but I’m excited to dive in! I gave my friends plenty of time to pick up their copy, but I know that it can be absolute torture to have a book on hand and not be able to read it!

I did try to record a video announcing this pick with the pup, but he had no idea what was going on and was far more interested in the spring smells and peeing on them. Here are some bloopers.

And for any Doctor Who fans, The Unicorn and the Wasp featuring David Tennant is based on Agatha Christie. Series 4, Episode 7. I need to re-watch this! I don’t think that it is currently streaming on any service that I’m subscribed to though.

The book that was the first runner up was the Malice. This is definitely one that I will also be reading soon. I mean, this two sentence synopsis: “A princess isn’t supposed to fall for an evil sorceress. But in this darkly magical retelling of “Sleeping Beauty,” true love is more than a simple fairy tale.” I have to read that! Maybe in June.

Are you a part of a virtual book club? If so, I’m curious to know if you meet in a written/ messaging format, or in a video/ audio setting?

If you have read any of these books, drop a rating below. NO SPOILERS!

(Also, I’ve just gotten back from vacation and will get together a post about my adventures soon!)
