I am constantly amazed at the variety of nature across the US. I guess that it shouldn’t be very surprising as it is geographically a very large country, but it truly never ceases to amaze me. I can’t say that I had ever hiked a forest to ocean trail before. Enter the Awendaw passage. Every bend in the trail presented another visually stunning scene. It was not easy leaving! It was hard to narrow down a few spots to stop for some yoga pictures. (Had to do it for the ‘gram.) But slowing down and spending time in a spot can be extremely relaxing, which is kind of the point of a vacation.
Did you know that you can look up reviews of hiking trails? There are several excellent websites AllTrails.com HikingProject.com and others local to your area. I did read reviews. They were correct. Salt marshes do indeed have a lot of bugs. And mean ones at that! One bit my hand and held on as I shook it- like I was a bucking bronco and there was prize money on the line! I also got a few bites on my feet, but that’s kind of to be expected when you walk around barefoot in the woods. *shrug* 🤷♀️ Along the trail I saw some adorable crabs in the mud, a lizard on the bridge, and a tiny little green snake that held itself as stiff as a board to camouflage itself on the trail. If the opportunity to hike more of this trail pops up for me in the future, I will definitely take it.

This natural arch was absolutely magical.
At one point, the trail ran close to the water and there was a very cool set of ramps leading down to the water that had rails to slide your kayak along. It made me wish that I had a kayak with me. Although, I’m not gonna lie, the idea of an alligator hopping on board might deter me if I actually had the chance. 🐊 I walked down the ramp to get some pictures near the water. For some reason I got wobbly legged at the last second and convinced myself that I was going to fall in. Do you ever get that way? As soon as I took a moment to take stock of the situation, I realized that I was making more of it in my head than was actually reasonable to be afraid of. Literally, I was about to leave for the ocean after grabbing some lunch. And this was pretty calm water. And I can swim reasonably well. Good opportunity to look back and see the value in reevaluating a situation that may feel overwhelming at first. I even managed to get in an arm balance on the dock.

The remainder of my vacation was pretty much spent on the beach relaxing- a little more yoga, and some seagull and wave watching. And while spending the day at the ocean is great, there is nothing quite like a beach sunset. Somehow not many people stuck around for it though! Maybe they were locals and had work the next day? Admittedly it was a bit chilly, too. All I know is those were some of the prettiest golden hours that I have seen. Street parking is metered there, but if you are planning on staying all day, the city has an all day lot. Well, silly me, I read the sign saying that it closed at sunset, but got caught up in looking at the sunset. My car did not spend the night locked in, but I think I cut it pretty close!

Oh and the food! Can’t leave that out! If you know me, you know that I’m obsessed with delicious food. I rarely eat out at home, so half of the point of even going on vacation is eating out.

My favorite breakfast spot- Saveurs Du Monde Cafe- just look at that chocolate croissant. 😍

Favorite lunch or dinner spot- The Obstinate Daughter. OMG Roasted Beets with espresso marinated strawberries, feta crema, Herons Farm sea beans, spring onion, balsamic agrodolce and their signature Old Danger Pizza with pancetta, farm egg, scallion, white sauce, mozzarella, parmesan, black pepper- my mouth is literally watering thinking about how good those were. 🤤

Coolest drink 🍹 and ambiance- Husk. Hard to beat the atmosphere of a restored Victorian-era home while drinking a “Charleston Light Dragoon’s Punch” – a recipe from 1792 discovered in the archives of the Preservation Society of Charleston. But I’ll be totally honest, clearly I’m not getting paid for this opinion lol, I found the food… under seasoned and frankly… kind of forgettable. 🙈
There were also two solid choices within walking distance of my hotel. How nice is that at the end of a long day when you want to indulge in an adult beverage? Crave- voted best mac and cheese in Charleston and I’d have to agree. Sooo delicious. And Basil- I usually look for a place that makes a rice and veggie dish that tricks my stomach into thinking I’m still eating at home. It worked, and it was very tasty.
I hope to do more traveling soon, hopefully internationally sometime soon! Do you have a must visit place? Let me know below.
