Kayaking at Lake Wilgreen

The first time I went kayaking was around 8 years ago. I went to Tempe Town Lake and absolutely loved it. I knew that I wanted a kayak just from that one outing. It took a few years, but when I moved to Kentucky, one of the first things that I did was to buy a Hobie. “Kentucky has more miles of running water than any other state except Alaska.” According to the University of Louisville.

The first summer that I had my kayak, I lived a few miles down the road from a ramp into Elk Horn Creek. I think it is the most beautiful place I’ve taken it to date, and plan on returning there this summer.

My latest outing was to Lake Wilgreen. Which is a quiet spot, no motors allowed, and close to the freeway for easy access. And did I mention that it is really beautiful?

You may or may not have caught on by now, but I’m kind of into nature. On this outing I saw a mama with her adorable ducklings. They were so tiny that you could barely see a little head floating above the water! I was respectful and tried to give them some space a floated by quietly.

I will also never get tired of watching herons. This time I saw one flying across the water and take what looked like a big splashing flop into the lake. Of course my sarcastic butt said, “well that was graceful.” Turns out that it had snatched a fish! It was then a little less in a hurry to get out of the way for me as I passed. I suspect that swallowing a whole live fish might weigh you down a bit. It made me wonder how many fish on average a heron that size eats in a day.

Whenever I see the houses on the lake, I’m slightly jealous at the idea of being able to go for a float. Passing thought anyway. I don’t know that I would actually want to live on a lake. Despite how it may seem with the whole online presence, 😅 I’m a pretty private person. Though I imagine that a private dock would be a pretty sweet gig. I go back and forth in my mind. Maybe I’ll have to plan a vacation at a place like that one day…

And of course there was yoga on the kayak and on the dock. Who would have put money on me falling in? 😂 I might have. But fortunately I only got one foot a little wet getting out at the end of the day.

With Memorial Day coming up, do you plan on spending your time off on the water?
